You Were An ‘Accident’

Conversations with Mom, cont…

Me: I am watching Alan Watts videos. Have you ever heard of him?

Mom: No, I don’t think so.

Me: He was a philosopher & writer and was around during your hay day. Not old school, but he was around when I was just a little twinkle in your lovely eyes.

Mom: You mean when you were just a little pest in my eyes? Remember, you were an accident.

Me: That’s not very nice. Mr. Watts would have a lot to say about that. “When a man no longer confuses himself with the definition of himself that others have given him, he is at once universal and unique.”

Mom: Oh big deal. I can’t understand that. I can’t understand him at all.

Me: I have a video for you…

No it still hurts, I know my mother use to say things like that and in the moment I would laugh but in my silence I would hear it again and again. It’s good to hear that you have a relationship with your mom, some don’t.
