Ready or Not! Here I Come.

Well, I am OFFICIALLY no longer waiting for the final denial to come around from the Federal Government, concerning disability. I spoke with my lawyer and they said it could take up to 2 more years. I’ve already waited 3.5, so needless to say, I had a few choice words.

I’ve been out of work for 3.5 years now because I resignes, and that’s only hurt me terribly in the end. I heard from a very close friend, who is going through something similar, that she had just got word she was hired for a position that couldn’t be better suited for her. That’s all the motivation I needed. I knew we were a good team.

So, I took the opportunity to look into graphic design jobs, something I haven’t done for over 13 years. There are plenty and many that I’m over-qualified for. So, I said myself last night, what are you waiting for?!

The idea of having to put together a portfolio was what always stopped me in my tracks, even when I wanted to move on from my last job. It’s usually very time-consuming. So, nothing was ever updated, saved, etc. Luckily, I had a few choice pieces saved online. And, I went to town creating a site from squarespace.

Not ideal, as most designers these days know Web design. I did, but I lost touch long ago and in this business, you have to keep on that technology, yesterday. I can make anything look pretty, but it’s whole new ball game when it comes to function.

But I figured, I have 15 years experience in the field, as a Creative Manager for past 5 years. So, just get something up, write a kick-ass resume and hope for the best.

I spent all night last night designing and redesigning a myriad of templates for my portfolio. Nothing really stuck out until my last attempt this evening.

So, without further adieu, here it is:

I still have to write the resume from scratch, fix snafus and write better copy. But I made a big dent, I think. I’ll be purchasing my own domain before this is sent to any potential employers. It’s not a good look for a designer to have “.squarespace” attached to your site.

I’ll worry about their questions as to why I was out of work or so long, for when the time comes. And, I will be deleting this post. No need for future potential employers to see this.

Thank you so much! It’s tough, but hopefully it will be like ripping off a bandaid and the process will be over before I know it.
